Northern Minnesota seemed like a swamp. It was lush, and full of lakes. You couldn’t see the wild rice because it grew under water (and wasn’t even rice, they said), but there were lots of fish and friendly people. The people of Minnesota had the same accents as the people in the movie “Fargo.”
I had a chat with Arley Benson, the owner of the Lakeview Motel Resort in Crosby. Our room was decorated 50’s style. It was the “Beatnik Room.” Other rooms had other styles, Arley said. His units were on a lake and you could fish or rent a boat and look for wild rice.
“It’s pretty lush around here,” I said. “We like Minnesota.”
“We do too,” he said. “When the glaciers came down through here they left us with some pretty good soil.”
“Yeah, the soil out East is really bad. It’s full of lead and stuff,” I said.
“The industrialization,” he said.
“Yeah,” I agreed.
“Crosby used to be a mining town.”
I found that out the next morning when I went cruising for a cup of coffee and stopped at the Iron Man Cafe and there was a photo on the wall of people in hard hats with flashlights attached in front and their faces were covered with soot. I told the waitress that I’d been a waiter once and she asked me if I wanted a job. She was just kidding but I appreciated the idea of it. It almost sounded kind of wonderful.
I went outside and took a couple of pictures of the hot summer street. It was an old street. Nothing had changed here in about fifty years. The buildings were still made of brick and everybody was in church, or maybe passed out at home, relaxing from the night before.
I was on vacation. I didn’t know what was going on here. Old mining town. Wild rice? We drove straight south.
When we got to Fort Stockton, Texas, a lady at the checkout counter told my wife that she was traveling across America because her sister-in-law had been sliced in the head by an outboard motor on the lake and so her brother, who was driving the boat, committed suicide.
“I’m coping real well with it,” she said. “That’s the nice thing about traveling. It gets your mind off of things.”
That’s the thing about it. You could never find a town like Fort Stockton unless you’re traveling with no destination. It happens by accident, a strip of abandoned concrete block buildings, car dealerships, gas stations, motels and Mexican restaurants, and you think, what a terrible place, until you stop in at the restaurant. Rosa was lovely. She cooked and served us simple Mexican food. There was something here that you couldn’t put your finger on.
We swam in the pool of the Econolodge. There was a cool breeze that rippled across the water and the surface sparkled from the full moon. The sky was a deep cobalt hue, even at night, with the motel lights and the trees radiating through the moonlight and the motel doors glowing turquoise. There was a desert iridescence. Everything hummed. It was like being inside of a refrigerator, or maybe like the world had stopped, the cool breeze blowing and the warm pool water glowing and reflecting light. I took a photo. The Mexican food had settled in our stomachs. There was peace. There was real life radiating through our veins.

Tonight I purchased my first ever moleskine. I plan using these to get my ideas down quickly so I'll be able to get to them later. One for music. One for photography. One for....
